Ian McCulloch often cites God as the co-writer of “The Killing Moon.” He goes as far as describing this work of art as more of a psalm than a song. The track was released on January 20, 1984 as the lead single from the Bunnymen’s fourth studio album, Ocean Rain. McCulloch stated that the album should be on display at the Louvre. The record label followed suit, marketing the release as “the greatest album ever made.” While their contemporaries were searching for world wide chart success, the Bunnymen were going for an orchestral sound shaped by the likes of Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, and Edith Piaf. One thing is for certain: the Bunnymen reached far beyond the horizon trying to capture an otherworldly magic and shimmer. For a brief moment, that artistic vision was realized. You can bear witness to it when you listen to “The Killing Moon.”
